Course description: This course introduces students to Family and Consumer Sciences through various units of instruction. The units relate to personal growth and development, consumer and management skills, goal setting and decision making, family studies, nutritional needs, food preparation and sanitation, career development and interpersonal relationships.
Students will:
- Develop Personal and Social Skills – Practice communication, goal setting, decision-making, and social skills to build healthy relationships and friendships.
- Understand Adolescent Growth – Identify the developmental tasks of pre-adolescence and adolescence and explore ways to enhance personal development through volunteerism.
- Make Informed Choices – Recognize the consequences of high-risk behaviors, differentiate between wants and needs, and apply consumer rights and responsibilities.
- Manage Time and Money Wisely – Identify sources of income for teens, explore time management strategies, and understand the impact of financial decisions.
- Explore Family and Community Roles – Examine different family structures, roles within families, and the influence of community involvement through FCCLA.
- Practice Healthy Living – Analyze influences on eating habits, plan nutritious meals, and calculate calorie needs based on BMI.
- Demonstrate Safe and Effective Cooking Skills – Use kitchen appliances properly, follow sanitation rules, and apply correct food preparation techniques.
- Care for Clothing and Textiles – Explore clothing choices, proper care and storage of clothing, and complete a textile project using hand or machine sewing.
- Prepare for Future Careers – Identify career options in Family and Consumer Sciences, analyze employability skills, and predict how technology will impact work and daily life.
- Connect Learning to Real Life – Apply math, science, and communication skills in practical situations and recognize the impact of consumer and environmental decisions.
7th grade course: Family and Consumer Science Essentials

Course description: This comprehensive course provides an opportunity for acquiring basic life skills and guides students to explore and select specific areas for concentrated study. Emphasis is on family, employability skills, adolescent development, the introduction of textiles, interiors and design, financial management, parenting, establishing healthy relationships, creating a foundation for healthy lifestyles, and nutrition.
Students will:
- Develop Personal Growth and Social Skills – Examine personal values, character traits, and social skills while creating an improvement plan for self-development.
- Make Responsible Life Choices – Identify and evaluate peer influences, high-risk behaviors, and the consequences of adolescent decision-making.
- Set and Achieve Goals – Develop and implement short-term and long-term SMART goals for personal and academic success.
- Balance Family, Work, and Wellness – Analyze challenges in balancing family and work responsibilities while considering physical, psychological, and social wellness factors.
- Understand Financial Responsibility – Demonstrate budgeting, comparison shopping, wise spending habits, and calculate costs such as sales tax and discounts.
- Prepare for Future Careers – Explore career pathways in Family and Consumer Sciences and demonstrate employability skills, teamwork, and workplace ethics.
