Course description: The goal of physical education is to provide Kentucky students with the knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain physically healthy lifestyles. According to the Shape of the Nation Report (2016), “studies show that active and fit children consistently outperform less active, unfit students academically in both the short and the long term. They also demonstrate better classroom behavior, greater ability to focus and lower rates of absenteeism.” As a result, students need exposure to a quality physical education program that includes opportunities for the exploration of a variety of lifetime physical activities.
Students will:
- Demonstrate Fundamental Movement Skills – Perform locomotor, non-locomotor, and combined motor skills in a variety of games and activities.
- Apply Movement Concepts and Strategies – Use movement principles, strategies, and tactics to improve physical performance.
- Develop Coordination and Control – Send and receive objects with accuracy while adjusting for speed and distance.
- Engage in Physical Activity for Health – Participate in diverse physical activities to support overall health and wellness.
- Understand Fitness Components – Identify skill-related fitness components and apply the FITT principle to different activities.
- Make Healthy Nutrition Choices – Select appropriate foods and portion sizes to support physical activity and growth.
- Manage Stress Through Physical Activity – Recognize exercise as a positive way to handle stress and maintain well-being.
- Demonstrate Sportsmanship and Teamwork – Show respect, cooperation, and conflict resolution skills in physical activities.
- Follow Rules, Etiquette, and Safety Guidelines – Apply rules, self-officiate games, and practice safety procedures.
- Appreciate the Social and Emotional Benefits of Physical Activity – Recognize how exercise promotes self-expression, social interaction, and personal growth.

- Develop Specialized Skills – Refine and combine motor techniques to enhance participation in physical activities.
- Understand the Benefits of Physical Activity – Explain how being active supports physical, social, and mental well-being.
- Set and Adjust Personal Fitness Goals – Use the FITT principle to develop and modify fitness plans based on current fitness levels.
- Make Healthy Nutrition and Hydration Choices – Balance food, snacks, and water intake to support an active lifestyle.
- Manage Stress Through Physical Activity – Analyze activities that help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
- Demonstrate Sportsmanship and Conflict Resolution – Encourage peers, follow rules, self-officiate games, and resolve conflicts cooperatively.
- Practice Safety and Risk Management – Follow safety principles, rules, and procedures in various physical activities.
- Promote Physical Activity and Healthy Choices – Create messages that inspire others to participate in safe and healthy activities.

- Personal Fitness Planning: Develop and implement a personal fitness plan using the FITT principle to set and achieve fitness goals.
- Participation in Physical Activities: Participate in a variety of physical activities to improve cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance.
- Mental, Emotional, and Social Health: Recognize the importance of mental, emotional, and social health and develop strategies for managing stress and building self-esteem.
- Nutrition and Hydration: Analyze the role of nutrition and hydration in physical performance and overall health.
- Substance Abuse Awareness: Identify the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs on the body, and develop prevention and resistance strategies.
- Injury Prevention and Safety: Demonstrate safe practices and injury prevention strategies in physical activities, including the proper use of equipment.
- Informed Health Decisions: Make informed personal health decisions that promote long-term wellness and healthy lifestyles.
- Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Communicate effectively and demonstrate interpersonal skills in health-related situations, such as refusal skills and group leadership.
- Advocacy for Wellness: Advocate for personal, school, and community wellness by promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyles.
